I wonder if he got the idea from Raymond Carvers own original title for his collection of stories that was first published as "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love". It was originally titled Beginners too.
Maybe! I'm not sure...have you seen the Robert Altman film, "Shortcuts"? It is based on a bunch of Carver stories. That was actually my first introduction to Carver.
